 The Ronan Family - 1912 to 1980

Ronan Mortuary was founded in 1912 at 714 S. Division by Peter Ronan. Nicholas Ronan joined his brother, Peter, in 1914, and became the Ronan Brothers Funeral Home from 1916-1919. In 1919 Peter gained sole ownership and relocated in 1920 to 1168 Madison Ave. In 1929 the location was changed again to 814 Jefferson where Edwin N. Ronan joined his father in 1935. Edwin purchased the building on the corner of Madison and Dickinson SE in 1953. Mr. Ronan passed away in 1980.

The Vanderpool Family - 1938 to 1970

Birdsall Funeral Home was operated at 63 Jefferson by Ira D. Birdsall until 1938. Stewart Vanderpool purchased the funeral home and operated Vanderpool Funeral Home at 63 Jefferson until 1944 when he moved to 3131 S. Division (the present location). Stewart Vanderpool died in 1970.

The Stegenga Family - 1970 to Present

Bruce and Norma Stegenga purchased the Vanderpool Funeral Home in June 1970. The name was changed to Vanderpool-Stegenga Funeral Chapel in 1973. The Ronan Mortuary was purchased in 1975 from Edwin Ronan and the name was changed to the Ronan-Stegenga Mortuary.

In 1982 the two separate locations of Ronan-Stegenga Mortuary and Vanderpool-Stegenga Funeral Chapel were joined to form what is known today as the Ronan-Vanderpool-Stegenga Funeral Chapel located at 3131 S. Division Avenue, Wyoming, Michigan. In 1981 major renovation took place, doubling the size of the Division Avenue location, making it possible to accommodate the two separate businesses in one location.

Bruce G. Stegenga (1940-1991) operated the funeral chapel at this location until his death in 1991. Norma assumed ownership of the firm and operated the business office. In January of 1993, Norma married Klaas Kapteyn of Byron Center.

1993 - Kurt B. Stegenga, son of Bruce and Norma, continues the family tradition as a licensed funeral director and owner of the funeral chapel. Kurt and wife, Sue, have three children.

2001 - Stegenga Funeral Chapel, Belmont location opens, offering funeral services to Northern Kent County. The cities of Belmont, Rockford, Sparta, NE and NW Grand Rapids, and surrounding areas are served by the Stegenga family. With two locations, the Stegenga Family of Funeral Service offers its services to the Greater Grand Rapids and West Michigan communities.

2008 - Cremation Services of West Michigan is launched. The online referral company is for families seeking affordable cremation service, referring families to the Stegenga Funeral Chapel and the Ronan-Vanderpool-Stegenga Funeral Chapel for affordable options. Sue Stegenga, Kurt's wife, is a key part of making this referral service available.

2011 - In a joint effort to help support families with the decision of cremation we added Advantage Memorial Event Planning and UrnSales.com under the Cremation Services of West Michigan umbrella. Offering families the event planning  for a memorable service even if they did not use our funeral home for the actual cremation service was found to be a relief for families not sure where to turn. With our price conscious staff, we also added UrnSales.com to provide affordable urns to our community and the community world wide.

2013 - grmarkers was organized. The staff has been working with Patten Monument here in Grand Rapids for years assisting families with placing a permanent memorial at the cemetery. In the summer of 2013 Stegenga secured two additional suppliers and formed grmarkers to help families beyond those served by Stegenga  Funeral Chapel find affordable marker options.

Today - The Stegenga Funeral Chapel and the Ronan-Vanderpool-Stegenga Funeral Chapel are operated as one organization. Its locations provide funeral, burial and cremation services for families in the West Michigan community. Since 1993, Kurt Stegenga has maintained a conservative view of pricing, believing in keeping funerals affordable to the families his funeral home serves.
