Carol Gribbell

November 27, 1954 ~ June 15, 2018

Gribbell, Carol Mast Gribbell(63) of Trufant, Michigan, was born on November 28, 1954, and passed away on June 16, 2018 after a long, valiant battle with cancer. She grew up in Comstock Park, MI as one of five daughters of Andrew and Carol Mast (Nordyke). After receiving degrees from Hope College and Colorado State University, she worked in business, landscaping, and healthcare, even working in spite of her disease. She loved spending time with family, reading, working outside, and caring for her animals. She is remembered as a loving and caring mother, wife, and sister who never wanted to inconvenience anyone; her strength through challenges and will to fight defined her life. She is preceded in death by her parents, and leaves behind her husband of nearly 30 years, Mark, daughter, Mikalah, sisters, Andrea Kuenzer, Miriam (Christopher) Bischoff, Nanette (James) Greendyk, and Margot (John) Timmer, and many nieces and nephews. A private, family service will be held. Memorial donations can be sent to St. Mary’s Lacks Cancer Center, 250 Cherry St., Grand Rapids, MI 49503, (616) 685-6714. My name is Heidi. My Mother is Greta and she has MS. We’ve been blessed to have Carol as our caregiver for almost ten years. People tell me that my mom looks so good considering the stage of her disease , but that didn’t come without the help of Carol. This woman was one of the most amazing people I’ve had the privilege to know. She came to us right after my Dad died of brain cancer. I was 24, and while I “managed” the household since I was very young taking care of my mom; I didn’t know how to completely manage everything. I didn’t know where to start, Carol did. She revived my household. She revived me.  It is no doubt she was a hard worker and invested herself in people or animals. Whether she nursed a person or animal back to health, it made her proud once succeeded. She did more than just help my mom eat and bathe, she gave her life genuine quality. Quality she would not get anywhere else and because of her I have been able to keep my Mom in our Home. We won the war against bed sores together too. She was more to us than someone working in our home; she took care of us all. Carol would bring me a Diet Coke in the morning when she sensed I needed it most, did a little housework for me when she could tell I was rundown, kept track of everything I lost, and sometimes a roast would end up in the crockpot because she could see that I didn’t plan very well. When my son needed help and I couldn’t get to him right away, she was there. Once I was so sick, the only food he could reach was a bag of mini marshamallows. Thank god for Carol. She always watched over anyone that needed it. And if she found me on the floor in the morning with my head in the toilet, I always woke up with a pillow and blanket. Even my pets waited by the door each leonine. For her. We feel so blessed to have had her in our lives. She was humble, honest, sacrificial, and just one bad ass lady!! She’d give anything she could to people and asked for nothing in return. She hardly ever missed a day of work and rarely showed up late even after mother nature dumped several feet of snow on us overnight. She taught me so much, I just admire her. She had grit and grace. She was such a wonderful, positive, supportive and loving part of lives. I’ll never meet anyone like her and we will miss her forever. It is a huge loss to this world, but thankfully the suffering has ended. My family sends prayers of peace to Mark, Mikalah, and her family. It’s hard to lose a loved one, but find comfort knowing you were blessed to know a true angel; sent to teach us all until the Lord called her home.  Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord; and let perpetual light shine upon her.  -Heidi Versluis Grand Rapids, MI
