Everett Groll

June 23, 1936 ~ March 17, 2019

Everett “Corky” Joseph Groll, one of the world’s most wonderful people, passed away on March 18, 2019 at the age of 82. He was preceded in death by his dear wife Dorothy, his brothers and sisters Jason, Eugene, Lester Jr, Janice, Diana, and Judy. He is survived by his sister Pat Thill, his children Paul Groll, Dorothea (Jeff) Trimble, Kathy (Jim) Huizenga, his 6 biological grandchildren (Kelsey, Emily, Mason, Anna, Elizabeth, and Juliana), his two grandchildren who adopted him (Jordan and Kami), many nieces and nephews, and countless and wonderful friends. Corky was born on June 24, 1936 in Oconto, Wisconsin and spent his childhood in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where he met the love of his life Dorothy. Like many in his generation, he married, started a family, and joined the United States Air Force where he served honorably and with distinction in the service of his nation. He made his way to Belmont, Michigan where he raised his family and worked a career in healthcare as an x-ray technician. He lived out his years in his own home surrounded by towering trees he had planted himself. Corky was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, trapping and fishing. He possessed an amazing and witty intellect fueled by his constant reading. Above all, he loved his family and friends and touched every one of them with his warmth, humor, and genuine concern for their well-being. His accomplishments and amazing life could take up pages and pages but all who knew him will know that Corky would’ve wanted it kept short and sweet. He will be deeply missed. His funeral service will be held 4:00 PM Saturday, March 23 at Stegenga Funeral Chapel, 1601 Post Drive NE, Belmont. Corky’s family will greet relatives and friends 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 2:00 - 4:00 PM at the funeral chapel. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Corky’s name to an organization of your choice that supports our Veterans. Finally, the family would like to express its heartfelt appreciation for the incredible care team at Mercy Health / St. Mary’s, who provided for Corky and his family with such immense care, warmth, and comfort. About two years ago while home on leave I stopped by to see Corky. We had an hour long visit and spent the time talking more about re- loading (a hobby I have taken up since being fascinated by it as a child due to Corky’s expertise) than reminiscing about the past. However, he and the entire Groll family, was an important part of my youth. He served as a great example of practical intellect and fun. So sorry for your loss, may Christ comfort you in your grief.

I'm sorry we were out of state when we found out about Corky's passing. We would have liked to attend his funeral. Corky and Dorothy, cared for our kids since they were babies until they were in school. They were treated like part of the family. Eric and Jason, loved spending time with Corky, Dorothy, Kathy and Patches, playing in the sand and sitting around the campfire. We felt so comfortable, having our kids with these fun, loving people. Our condolences to the family.  Shelley and Chuck Foster, April 5.

Something drew me to look you up today, Corky, and I see that you just passed on. I'm so sorry that I didn't stay in touch since Dorothy passed. There are so many memories that flood back from when you looked after me as I grew up….nights around the fire pit, canoe trips, sleepovers…I still have the blanket that Dorothy made for me when I was 6. You were very important in making me who I am today and I'm eternally thankful. I wish you all the love that you gave me and send all my best to Kathy, Patches, Paul and the rest of your wonderful family. God bless you.

I remember when they had a trailer by the house we grew up in and at night we would hang out around the firepit , have smores play in the lake and listen to the memories they were able to tell us. I also remember him being there at my Dad's funeral and being there to talk with my husband about being in the service and doing what they were hired to do. They both served this Country and I am proud to have had him in our lives . we love you all and will miss him tons. Todd and Nancy.big hugs to you all
