He was my friend in CCHS high school, AQ college and in out neighborhood in Belmont! Herm took over our lawn fertilizing, and he killed weeds, trimmed trees, laid down mulch and planted shrubs. Those sessions create this precious memory… he would sit in a lawn chair in the garage with Mike Cherrette to enjoy some liquid refreshment and discuss world problems…Herm did most of the talking usually. He and Mike never dreamed that their lives would both be tragically cut down with little warming by pancreatic cancer in 2012 and 2017! My heart is heavy with this loss today. And yet with this sadness I smile at my memories of Herm.

No man has ever been a finer neighbor, friend and caring being. He and Jeanne have been our across the street neighbors for thirty-two years. They have been such a part of our lives that it will be impossible to not see him working in the yard in one way or another. He was always there to help and offer his expertise on lawns, trees and flowers. We owe so much to Herm for our garden due to the many varieties of bulbs he gave to us. He and Jerry spent many hours talking about railroads and politics..two men with like minds. Herm kept up on whatever was happening in our township and could answer just about any question one would have. He was always looking after others. He has left behind a wonderful loving family. May we be there for them as much as they have been there for us. Jerry and Terry Davis

To the entire family, my sincerest condolences on the passing of Herm. While he did work for CSX and myself CP Rail, we were all a close knit team and I will never forget the professional closeness we shared for several years. Herm was the ultimate professional in all my dealings with him and it saddens me greatly to hear this news. Herm my friend, look down on all of us from time to time, and if we need guidance, give it to us. Rest In Peace , your friend always, Brooke Ruskin

I will always remember meeting Herm for the first time. I wasn't sure at first what to expect; him being a union representative and myself in management and from a different railroad.Well he sure did not take long to make an impression on me. What a gentleman,he sure made an impression on me. Herm was a true railroader,he love the business, the trains and his fellow employees. His dedication and cooperation in keeping the trains running was exceptional. His dedication was exemplified when he took the time to drive from Grand Rapids to Toronto Canada, making sure we had the information we needed to keep the 500 series trains operational over the CSX Railway. Herm is at peace now, he may be gone, however never forgotten, his memory lives on. To the Boruta family my deepest sympathies. Richard Bell

Herm was by far my favorite customer, while working at Silver Bullet. We had the best conversations about our lives: He, about the railroad and his family….Jeanne w/ long hair, long ago and taking "vacations" (staying at home while kids were w/ sitters)....his kids, all around my age and of COURSE his grand kids, with their sand in the basement and of the railroad he bought them. He enjoyed hearing about my life w/ traveling and motorcycle riding….but wishing to be a mother and wife. I was lucky to have him and Jeanne (finally) attend my wedding and meet one of our children. We always traded cards for the holidays and had phone calls a few times a year. He said in every conversation: "Well, you wanted to be a mom and wife, and you got it. I'm so glad you got what you wanted." He was like an "Uncle" to me and I will miss our friendship dearly. Love and hugs to all his family. I know more than anything, he wanted to stay with you forever. You were the twinkle of his eye.

Eulogy for a Friend So many moments we take for granted, because we assume there will be so many more. They say don’t assume because tomorrow is never promised. We know this is too true when a dear friend is suddenly taken. May choirs of angels escort you into paradise, dear Hermie. We rejoice your suffering wasn’t prolonged but we miss you already and imagine our world as less without you. You, Hermie: Faithful husband, dedicated father, doting grandfather, stalwart friend, devout believer, passionate advocate of the working man, creative gardener, tireless caregiver to the elderly, generous cook, and so much more. Through a lens of loss, we view our many memories. It breaks us to realize no more memories will be made and causes our tears to flow like water. It’s hard to get our hearts and heads around a future without you, dear friend. Softly, gratefully we cradle the gift of friendship that was, and lament.Lament.Lament.-Emma Darling

HERMAN AND I WENT TO GRADE SCHOOL (IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY) AND HIGH SCHOOL TOGETHER. I RECALL THE SPARKLE IN HIS EYES AND HIS INFECTIOUS SMILE. HE WAS VERY BRIGHT AND GOT ALONG VERY WELL WITH EVERYONE. MY PRAYERS AND SYMPATHIES GO OUT TO HIS WIFE JEANNE. AND THEIR FAMILY. GOD HAS TAKEN HIM HOME WHERE HE WILL BE AT PEACE. Herm was such an influence and endless source of wisdom, especially Railroad Wisdom, for so many, for so long. He never gave up the good fight for honest, fair and ethical treatment of all those around him. This marks the end of an era of sorts, but a part of Herm's genius was to pick and train and nurture his successor, so that all those battles would continue and continue to be won. He did like to win! JRF will carry on the legacy of Herm for decades to come. Well done Herm, and thank you. You are missed, Don and AJ Silseth Prescott, AZ
