Uncle Russ was truly one of a kind. I will truly miss him and the fun times we had fishing with him as kids. Except for the time he pretended that his boat broke down in Walled Lake and he had my brother and I row all the way back to the dock, across the lake. Only to discover that he accidently shut the fuel off. He laughed and laughed, Great times!! Rest in peace. Love Bill Lemmon and family

Some of my best childhood and teen memories were with my dad and Uncle Russ, way too many to share here.  Going fishing with him; rabbit, and pheasant hunting. I did a lot of stuff at mom’s place with Uncle Russ; it was very much like working with my dad all over again, thanks for the loan girls. Some times when we needed something for a job at mom’s Uncle Russ and I would make a run to H.D., every time (no matter where we parked) he would say “how come what we want is always at the other end of the store”? I could never get out of there without buying him a couple of hot dogs and a coke. Then (if the weather was good) we’d set on the tailgate and talk (I loved it every time).  One job we did was putting up a gate a crossed mom’s drive way, after hot dogs and a coke we started in, when we were done, as always mom wanted a picture (wish I had it). Then there were all those times in dad’s garage, “what’s with all the peanut butter Uncle Russ”? “Don’t eat that Dave! It’s for the squirrels”. One time Suzanne found him gassing one with the tail pipe on his truck, she was so worried that someone was going to call police on him.  I think the best part of being with him was listening to his thoughts on what was going on in the world (his and mine) and there was a difference! I remember Cathy ask me if I could do anything with an old “Cracker Barrel” rocker that he had gone “dumpster” diving for. They brought it out one day in the trunk of her car, well half of it was in the trunk and they had about fifty feet of rope to hold it in there. I rebuilt it for him and he and Cathy came out for lunch to pick it up. A few weeks later I was talking to him on the phone I ask him “so how’s the rocker Uncle Russ”? I had to put the damn thing out back yard by the garden”. Why? I ask “When I set on the porch every widow for three blocks around beings me cakes, cookies, pies, so I don’t set out there”.  I think the only time he would get to me was that he was ‚Äòregular Navy” and I was “Naval Aviation” an AIRDALE! Who never went to sea! But I did go to sea with your dad once, dad, Uncle Russ and I were going salmon fishing in Lake Michigan; as we were going down the channel I could see sprays of water coming over the break wall. “Maybe we shouldn’t go out Uncle Russ” “Ah you Airedales are all alike” as we came around the end of the wall we when up and down a good ten foot wave and back into the channel. I will never forget what he said “ya know Walt that guy in the restaurant said they were biting on the river this morning”. That was it we fished the river for two days and he never said a word about “Airedales”.  I really miss my dad a lot, your dad really did fill a void I had. I loved being with the man, just setting and talking about you name it, doing little jobs with him, running him to the Apple for lunch. Thanks for sharing him with me over the last twenty two years.
