Carroll Jay (Cal) Landstra, age 83, was surrounded by his family as he entered his heavenly home on Friday, August 9, 2024, after an eight-year battle with Parkinson's Disease. Cal was, above all else, a devoted follower of Jesus Christ; his strong faith was evident in his loving devotion to his family, his service to others, and the kindness and integrity with which he lived his life. Cal served in the United States Army for two years and during that time was stationed in West Berlin, Germany, for six months. After his service in the Army, Cal worked for Terryberry making class rings and then moved on to a position as bookkeeper for Associated Truck Lines. The last 47 years of his working life were spent at Dykema Excavators, where he served as the Controller. Cal loved to spend time with his family, especially on family vacations and cruises with his wife, Ann. One of his great joys was helping his kids with projects at their homes. He was an avid cyclist who logged thousands of miles on the roadways of West Michigan and a lover of good books, especially historical nonfiction. Cal was an active member of Messiah CRC, serving as an elder, catechism teacher, and cadet leader; he was a mentor through the Crossroads Prison Ministries program for many years. Cal was also a strong supporter of Christian education. Cal will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Ann Landstra (Damstra); children, Shawn Landstra, Dan and Laura Landstra, Patti Landstra, Joe and Rachel Landstra; grandchildren, Hayley, Carly, Sam, David, Jenna, Katie, Arie, Ava, Case, and Rens Landstra; sister, Nancy (Doug Shane) Smitter; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Rich and Jane Mulder and Case Damstra; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Cal was preceded in death by his son, Steven Jay Landstra; parents, Jay and Catherine Landstra; parents-in-law, Rens & Betty Damstra; sister-in-law, Alice Damstra; and brother-in-law, John Smitter. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at Messiah Christian Reformed Church, 2900 Springdale, Hudsonville with Pastor Nate Meldrim officiating. Burial will take place at Georgetown Township Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Monday, August 12 from 5-8 pm at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Unity Christian High School.
