Eugene Joseph Schmidt, Jr.

Eugene “Joe” Joseph Schmidt, Jr., age 82, of Wyoming, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, November 2, 2024.  He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis from 1961-1963.  Joe liked to be busy.  He was a handy guy who loved to build, figure things out and work hard.  He retired after 18 years from Steelcase Wood Division.  He enjoyed camping, hiking and bird watching with his wife.  He was a member of the North Country Trail Association  and the  Audubon Society.  He also was very active and intentional with his children and grandchildren, taking an interest and getting involved in their activities and hobbies, going to their events and spending time with them.  

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years, Jan; children: Christopher (Sonya), Dan (Maureen); grandchildren: Benjamin, Lindsey, Courtney, Alicia, Daniel, Jessica; siblings: Donna (Steve) Gerhard, Karl (Janet) Schmidt, Stephen (Judy) Schmidt, Jaqueline (Jeff) Scanlan, Tracy (Mark) Thomas, Eleanor (Tevis) Maloney; many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene Sr. and Eleanor Schmidt.  

Funeral Service will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, November 8, 2024 at  Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4145 Chicago Dr., Grandville, with Rev. Hank Vlaardingerbroek officiating.  Burial will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.  Relatives and friends may meet the family Thursday from 5-8 p.m. and also Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at  the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grand Rapids Home for Veterans  or Guiding Light Ministries.
