Harvey Theodore Steensma, age 81, of Wyoming, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, November 7, 2024, after a long courageous battle with cancer. Harvey was born on November 23, 1942, to the late Peter and Alice Steensma. He graduated from Lee High School in 1960 and went on to Detroit Barber College. Harvey was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who was blessed with a quick wit. Harvey was the owner of Wyoming Park Barber Shop for many years until he retired in 2010. Many lifelong friendships were made over the years with his clients. Harvey enjoyed spending time at the cottage on Hess Lake and hunting and fishing with his family. He was a talented handyman and could creatively make things out of nothing. During the winter months, Harvey and his wife, Sheryl, enjoyed wintering in Florida with their good friends, Bob and Deb Yonkman. He was preceded in death by his son, Kirk Steensma; parents-in-law, Virgil and Carolyn Holtsclaw; brothers, Gary Steensma, and Ronald Steensma. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years, Sheryl; son, Brad Steensma; daughter-in-law, Kris Steensma; grandchildren, Rachel (Pat) Volpe, Lauren and Jarod Beals, Kaitlyn Steensma, Audrey Clinger-Steensma; great-grandchildren, Emma Sue, and Hayes Patrick Volpe; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Vicki Steensma, Jim and Phyllis Holtsclaw, Ginny Patterson, Mark and Sandee Holtsclaw; and many loving nieces and nephews. The family would also like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to Katie and Anne of Faith Hospice for the love and compassionate care given to Harvey, and also to Pastor Harry Koops, Pastor Mark Bergsma, and the many friends and the congregation of Grant Reformed Church for the prayers, care, and kind visits during Harvey’s cancer journey. At Harvey's request, his body was donated to WMED in Kalamazoo for research purposes. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at Eighth Reformed Church, 841 Burton St. SW with Rev. Harry Koops officiating. Relatives and friends may visit with the family Tuesday, November 19 from 4-7 pm at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW and also on Wednesday from 10-11 am prior to the service at the church.
