James Lee Higgins, Jr.

June 2, 1982 ~ November 18, 2023

James Lee Higgins, Jr. passed away unexpectedly at the age of 41 on Saturday, November 18, 2023. He was born June 2, 1982 to Jim and Renee (Kerkstra). He will be deeply missed by his wife of 16 years, Jen Higgins; their 10 year old daughter, Sophie; his sisters, Heather (AJ) Almy, Ashley (Curt) Kooienga; his extended family and in laws, nieces and nephews; his mother, Renee; and a house full of animals he “didn’t want” but secretly adored.

Those who knew James knew that he was full of inappropriate jokes, ridiculous voices, and was always looking for a way to bring laughter to any situation. His wicked and dark sense of humor could get his family through any challenge that was thrown at them. He loved history and often subjected his family to a variety of docuseries. James was a diehard Detroit Lions fan, and could be heard providing colorful commentary during football season. He insisted every year was “the year” for the Lions and was especially excited for this season saying that “this year it’s true.”

He struggled with many medical concerns, often feeling that his body was fighting against him, but maintained his sense of humor and humility, and was committed to doing what he could to stay with his family as long as possible. James always said that his greatest accomplishment in life was being a dad, and his greatest wish was that his daughter would always know that her dad loved her. He wanted to be a good son, brother, husband, but most of all he wanted to be the best dad he could and he wanted to see his daughter grow up.

James and Jen’s daughter has her own health issues, and the experience of parenting and going through that as a family only strengthened their bond in a way that was unique to them. They always knew they could get through anything as long as they remained a team. James was a kind and compassionate man, often pointing out the strengths in his family and providing positive affirmation that gave his family the strength needed to overcome any adversity. His particular brand of cheerleading will be deeply missed and forever cherished as we turn the page and start this next chapter of our lives without him, and we can only hope to carry with us a sliver of the humor, humility, and kindness that he carried with him in life.

My sincere condolences and prayers to the family. I know he was dealing with health issues for a while, but it's always a shock when a loved one passes. I want to say it was such an honor to have him as a nephew. He was always very caring, encouraging and funny. I will never forget how James Lee and James(dad) helped me through a very turbulent time that I went though and I have always admired him for that. I know that he made a huge impact on the lives of others. You will be greatly missed James Lee!
