Jerry Brower

March 18, 1939 ~ September 3, 2022

Jerry (Gerald Eldon) Brower, age 83, of Hudsonville passed away peacefully at Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods on September 3, 2022. Jerry was born March 18, 1939, in Jenison, Michigan to Charles and Fanny Brower. He married Jean (Alberda) Brower on January 26,1961. Jerry graduated from Hudsonville Public High School and lived in the Jenison/Hudsonville area for his entire life. He enlisted in the Army after graduating and proudly served his country in the Army Reserves for 12 years. He credited his ability to sleep under any condition or circumstance to his time spent in the Army.

Jerry was a hard worker - always remembering his father’s words that if you didn’t do your best, you were stealing from your employer. After working several years as a plasterer, he started his own business which he owned and operated for decades with his friend and business partner, Bob Miedema. He employed some real characters over the years, including two of his sons-in-law.

Jerry loved his family. He became a fan of whatever his children and their families were doing: sports, home renovations, concerts, travel, and much more. In addition, he enjoyed hunting (with his brother, Wayne and son, Owen), fishing and being outdoors puttering in his yard.

He was a charter member of Georgetown Christian Reformed Church where he volunteered with the Feeding America ministry.

He was a loyal brother, cousin, and friend to many. But the role he has vacated that will leave the biggest void is that of father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He took great pride in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he could “kiss once when they arrived and twice when they left.” We will miss the stories prefaced by “I’ll tell you what…”, the twinkle in his eye when he teased or told a joke, and the warmth of his presence and personality.

Jerry’s faith was genuine and sincere - he knew he was a sinner saved by grace. We take great comfort in knowing he is free from the physical struggles he endured in his final days and find joy that he has been welcomed into eternal life, joining the great cloud of witnesses that has gone before him, including Jean, his wife of 60 years; a grandson, Calvin Sall; parents, Charles and Fanny; parents-in-law, Peter and Hannah Alberda; brothers, Merle and Laverne; sisters, Millie Visser and Evelyn DeWitt; brothers-in-law, Arend Visser and Harv DeWitt; sisters-in-law, Kay Brower and Ann Brower; and nephews, Peter DeWitt and Marlin Brower. If there are welcome potlucks in heaven, this one will be a doozy.

Jerry is survived by: his children, Kerry (Elroy) Vegter of Hudsonville, Karla (Bob) Duimstra of Appleton, WI, Owen Brower of Croton, and Karen (Bill) Sall of Grand Rapids; grandchildren, Jessica (Brian) Kuipers, Tyler (Chelsey) Vegter, Travis (Abbie) Vegter, Trent Vegter, Alexa (Alex Hinman) Duimstra, Jared (Erica) Duimstra, Peter (Mabel) Duimstra, Charlie and Eliza Duimstra, Delaney, Quinton, Lydia, and Hannah Sall; great-grandchildren, Savannah, Grayson, Ashton, and Ellery Kuipers and Landyn, Beckham, and Crew Vegter; siblings, Wayne (Donna) Brower, Paul (Sheryl) Brower, Wil (Jo) Alberda, Bern (Verna) Alberda, Pete (Bonnie) Alberda, Pat (Bob) Ungersma, and Clif (Marilyn) Alberda; and numerous nieces and nephews.

We love and miss you, Dad, and we’ll do our best to remember all the love you showed and the wisdom you imparted and pass it along.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday, September 16, 2022, at Georgetown Christian Reformed Church, 6475 40th Ave, Hudsonville with Pastor Marc Nelesen officiating. The service will be available via livestream at http://www.georgetowncrc.org/jerry. Burial Floral View Memorial Gardens. Relatives and friends may meet the family Thursday, September 15 from 4-7 pm at the church and again one hour prior to the service on Friday. This journey has been difficult but the tender and compassionate care our dad and family received at Trillium Woods eased the transition from this world to the next - we will always be grateful. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Faith Hospice or to the “Building Unity Expansion Fund” benefitting Unity Christian High School.
