John Henry Berends

November 23, 1945 ~ February 27, 2022

John Henry Berends went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, February 27, 2022 at the age of 76. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Tressa Berends; brother, Robert Berends. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 37 years, Donna; children, Benjamin Hess, Brooke (Joshua) Hoekstra, Stacie (Brian) Bode, Katelyn Berends (Blake Diephouse); grandson, Brayden Bode; sister, Phyllis Gebben; sister-in-law, Marilyn (Art) Vredeveld; mother-in-law, Nell Hill; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. John was a first team academic All-American basketball player at Central Michigan University in 1967 and went on to be inducted into their Hall of Fame. After graduation from CMU, he taught and coached for seven years before going back to school, this time attending Michigan State University’s vet school. He was a beloved large animal veterinarian for 44 years. The legacy he left behind is not easily summed up but the beauty of it is that if you knew him, you know it. John fully devoted his life to serving the Lord and in doing that he selflessly cared for everyone he met. He will be remembered first and foremost as a man of God but also as a talented athlete, dedicated basketball coach, trusted veterinarian, loving friend, and a truly exceptional husband, father, and grandfather. Funeral services will be held 11 am Saturday, March 5 at Kentwood Christian Church, 5841 Kalamazoo SE, Kentwood, with Rev. Patrick Gill officiating. Burial Mount Hope Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family on Saturday from 9:30-10:45am at the church before the service. To the friends and family of John we send our heartfelt condolences. I am sure that only Phyllis will remember, but we were neighbors for many years. In fact, we bought the Berends family home when they sold it and built right next door. We knew the entire family and I spent a number of years working with John and his father on the farm in Byron Center. He was my basketball idol and set the standard for those of us behind him in school. His many accomplishments were the extension of a life fully lived and served. It has been many years but I will never forget him.

John changed my life. Not only was he an inspiring math teacher and a great basketball coach, but he also understood me in a way few did. He wrote a recommendation for my application to Harvard. I cried when I read it. His belief in me was stronger than my belief in myself. He surely touched many lives as a teacher and coach, and his reputation as a patient and wonderful vet is not surprising. I wish I could have said goodbye and thanked him (again) for his mentorship. I will do so in my prayers. My heart goes out to his family.

His Uncle Bill was so proud of all John was able to accomplish and he enjoyed seeing John at the DeVries gatherings on the day after Thanksgiving.

Dr Berends was our vet for many of our pets through the years. He was so genuine and a real blessing. It's such a loss. Not just for all his friends, family and all of us who knew him, but for the world. He was a truly great man and the love and kindness he gave to everyone was infectious.

Dear Donna, I am so sorry for your great loss. Mr. Berends was the teacher a few of us girls wanted to marry. He was good looking, kind, funny and such a great math teacher. My favorite! A car load of us kids toilet papered his house but the barking dog gave us away. The next day we wanted for him to say something. He didn't. I'm sure he knew who had done it. He was such a great person. 50 years later Mr. Berends, I think of you with such happiness. Thank you for the memories.

Dr. Berends was our beloved vet and a genuinely kind man. He provided so much kindness during some very sad moments in my life and I will forever be grateful for him. His presence brought calmness, faith, and reassurance—he was incredibly smart, very practical, and giving of his time. He was a classic. A ‘modern-day’ local James Herriot. The words in his obit ‘The legacy he left behind is not easily summed up but the beauty of it is that if you knew him, you know it’ ring very true. He was a good one and will be very missed💔 Many prayers to his family.

He was one of kind, he had empathy, integrity, generosity, kindness, and so many other great attributes. Dr. B as we called him at the farm was always willing to talk things out with you, never in hurried if you had a million and one questions, never talked down to you like he was better than you, always respond to a text message or phone calls, thought out side the box of medicine. He was just so personable and made each every farm visit that much better and easier ❤️ We truly lost a great veterinarian and friend. Rest easy Doc B 🐎 you truly will be missed ❤️ Luann, Rachel, matt, abbie, kat, spyder, clover, Bella, jj and polo

I was an average 9th grade basketball player in 1970. Mr. Berends was the varsity coach who had influence over all levels of the program. I did something that warranted me being suspended from the team. I was a stupid 14 year kid that thought he knew everything and deserved to be suspended for my actions. Mr. Berends stepped in showed interest in me and gave me the opportunity to continue practicing and participating with my teammates with no opportunity to play in any games the rest of that season. I took his offer and it taught me valuable lessons. How smart and creative was he and what great human being to invest in me at that point in my life. I was not a star player by any means and it would have been far easier to just cut me loose. I've always remembered this time in my life and it was an act that influenced me greatly in becoming a responsible adult and parent myself. Prayers to your family and Rest in Peace Mr. Berends you where a good man.

To watch John interact with a child whose horse was sick or injured was a thing of beauty. John truly had a gift. He had the most gentle touch for his equine patients; not so much for his basketball opponents. Many great memories from the past 45 years.
