John Mark Gorsky

February 11, 1946 ~ February 13, 2024

John Mark Gorsky (age 78) had his prayer answered at 7:37 pm on February 13, 2024. He said repeatedly in his last days, “I just want to be in heaven with Jesus.” John is now where he longed to be and with whom he longed to be with, in heaven with his loving Savior. John is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Marie Gorsky; his two daughters, Lisa (Stephen) Roskiewicz, and Mary (Michael) McKenney; and his stepchildren, Greg and Stacey Raad (Amanda, Caden, Ethan, Adelyn), Laura and Todd Hufford (Alex, Katie, Zack), and Michelle and Tim Doctor (Ileah, Eve, Reeve, Regan). John had a very special connection and deep love for his grandchildren, Matthew Swart, Elisabeth Swart, Andrew Moon, Kelly McKenney and Colin McKenney. He hung on until Sunday, February 11, his 78th birthday, so he could see his grandchildren one last time, experience the joy of being together with them, and give them one last hug. John is also survived by his two sisters, Emilie (Jerry) Thees and Cynthia (James) Thrall; and his brother, whom he referred to as his “best friend,” Mark (Nadine) Gorsky. John is a graduate of St. John Vianney (1960), Godwin (1964), and WMU (1968). For 37 years, he taught elementary and middle school at Kelloggsville. He served in the local KEA and fought hard for teachers and support staff alike, loving his job and students throughout. His retirement was filled with baseball, football, fishing, grandkids, and travel with his wife. His love for sports started in Little League and led to him being a lifelong Tigers fan, while never giving up on the Lions. Without fail, he never gave up living and always stayed positive. He lived every day as a cherished gift. His last message to everyone is to believe in yourself and just do it! There will be a mass to celebrate John’s life at St. John Vianney on Wednesday, February 21 at 11 am., with visitation at the church from 10 – 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of John be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105, or The American Heart Association.

Living so far apart we “West Coast” cousins didn’t see enough of John to benefit fully from his many great qualities as a human being. What I do recall of our visits was his kind heart, his understanding of others needs, his “laid back” approach to life, and his great love of family. In truth, he and my own brother Jon were so similar they might have been twins, so in that respect I felt I “knew” him better. It’s obvious from the memories of many who knew him that John lived a fulsome life of curiosity, compassion, and love and that is how I will always remember him. God bless you John; may you rest now in peace.

"Brother John" Teacher, mentor, friend, confidant, advisor. Always positive, encouraging, and supportive as he influenced me and my teaching career. An exceptional man whose humbleness always minimized his importance, while quick to make fun of himself. John was masterful at easing tension; flashing the peace sign while exclaiming "peace" with his Cheshire grin and his distinctive hearty laugh. I will cherish every experience and memory always. John found peace on earth and extended good will to everyone. Peace, "Brother John."

John was my pal when we were tiny troublemakers (and I whacked him in the head with a shovel). I loved his positivity and optimism. Sarah loved "cousin John" from the moment she met him. We'll treasure out memories of John's and Ruth's visit, joining us at the Kittitas County Fair and the world famous Ellensburg Rodeo. Watching John's joy as he ate a corn dog, an ear of corn slathered in butter, and a hot scone with butter and raspberry jam is a special part of that memory. 'Til we meet again, my buddy.

For all of my 72 years, I have been blessed to be able to walk side by side with the best Big Brother that the heavens could have given to me. Brother John, we share so many things. I will always want to have your empathy, compassion and unselfishness. I will want to be like you with optimism, ambition, loyalty and strength. We can always be laughing together and loving on our families. Your special voice is still being heard by me and many other people. "You know this....Get up, your not hurt...You can do it...You ARE going to college...Just try it...Don't tell mom, she might never find out...You are strong...We don't quit...I love your kids...I am proud of you." I am still listening. You have a heart that is always teaching. I know that you cherish the opportunities that you had to connect with kids at school. It must be a great feeling to be so highly respected and appreciated by your past students. We won't be getting any words of wisdom from you now. It's okay, we are still hearing your voice as we journey through each day.

I remember Mr. Gorsky from West Kelloggsville throughout elementary school. I didn't have him for a teacher in 6th grade, but I wish I had.

Mr. Gorsky was my favorite teacher and I had the pleasure of having him for both 5th & 6th grade at West Kelloggsville. He was always so supportive and encouraging. Elementary school was many years ago & we still kept in touch. I can say I have had the pleasure of knowing a great man for 45 years! He will always hold a special place in my heart. RIP Mr. G, your legacy will forever be with all of us.
