Kenneth Hicks

May 22, 1934 ~ January 29, 2024

Kenneth E. Hicks, age 89, of Hudsonville, a loving and faithful husband, was called home by his Heavenly Father on Monday, January 29, 2024. He was born May 22, 1934, in Grand Rapids, MI. He was preceded in death by his daughter Jan Swieringa; sisters and brothers-in-law, Audrey and Jack Knock, June and Adrian Vlietstra, and Yvonne and Jack Harris. Kenneth will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 69 years, June (nee Kunst); children, Douglas and Barbara Hicks, Timothy and Kimberly Hicks, Karen and Randy Young; son-in-law, John Swieringa; six grandchildren: Jason and Kristen Young, Tyler and Taylor Young, Samantha and Tyler Petersen, Courtney Hicks, Kelsey and Justin Roberts, Alison Hicks; three great-grandchildren: Graham, Jude, and Silas Young; brother, Gordon and Judy Hicks; sister-in-law, Marilyn (nee Kunst) Visserman; and many nieces and nephews.

Kenneth spent most of his career working in the structural steel fabrication industry, working his way up from the shop floor, drafting room, and finally as a cost estimator. He continued to work part-time after retiring because he loved what he did, and because of his unwavering dedication and work ethic.
Kenneth and his wife June thoroughly enjoyed spending time with family in many different states. They were both very proud of every one of them. Holidays were special times for them, especially when family would spend it together at their home. They were both very active in their church and considered so many of their friends their extended family. Kenneth loved to fish and play golf, and enjoyed watching football, especially high school games which he attended frequently. He also excelled at, and took great pride in, woodworking, lawn care, and tending to his flower gardens.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 am on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at Calvary Church, 707 E. Beltline NE, Grand Rapids, MI, with Pastor Don Hancock officiating. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, February 6, from 6-8 pm, at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4145 Chicago Dr. SW, Grandville, MI. An additional time of visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday starting at 10:30 am.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to Calvary Church in memory of “Kenneth Hicks for the Benevolence Fund”.

I’m so sorry for your loss June. Our sympathies for you and your family. We have such fond memories of the two of you from our days at BHBC. Ken was a big part of our girls lives. They loved you both. I so appreciated how he took, especially Stacy, under his wings. He was a one of a kind man. 💙
