Lois Ann Hekman, age 71, of Byron Center, ended her earthly journey on the 7th day of March, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Bozeman, Montana, to Peter and Esther Vis. Lois grew up with eight brothers and sisters, and they never stopped loving and supporting each other throughout all the years of her life. After high school, Lois moved to Michigan to attend Calvin College, where she met her husband of almost 50 years, Charles. Lois dedicated her life to caring for others. During her four-decade nursing career, she served others in operating rooms, oncology floors, and long-term care. At home Lois raised two rambunctious sons, caring for them as only a loving mother can. She was a devoted grandmother who helped to raise her three grandsons. They energized her and kept her active, and she never grew tired of supporting and encouraging them in their many endeavors. Lois was an avid reader with a sharp wit, who loved skiing and walks on the beach. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, and she spent her life putting others first. She will be dearly missed. Lois will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Charles Evans; sons: Charles Gabriel (Anne Damiecka) Hekman, Jonathan Hekman; grandchildren: Dighton Hekman, Caleb (fiancée, Mira) Hekman, Asa Hekman, Gabriela Damiecka; siblings, Evelyn and Jay Koets, Esther and Mike Alsum, Harriet Vis, Noni and Calvin Geers, Bill and Barbara Vis, Pat Deur-Vis; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mel DeBoer, Lorrie Vis, David and Marcia Hekman, Jean VanSweden; many nieces and nephews.
