Mark Anthony Carey

September 14, 1952 ~ May 5, 2024

Mark Anthony Carey, age 71, of Belmont, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 5, 2024. Mark had a caring and generous heart. He often gave of his time and possessions selflessly to help others who were in need. More than anything, though, Mark loved and cared for his family. He loved his wife, Dawn, dearly and always made sure that all of her wants and needs were cared for. Mark also cherished Josh, Katie, and his granddaughters and was incredibly proud of them. He spared nothing to support Josh and Katie in whatever they were involved in and he never passed up an opportunity to spend time with his granddaughters or talk about them to his co-workers.

He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Myrtle Carey; and his brothers James Carey, Lynn Carey; father-in-law Harlin Hanenburg. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 31 years, Dawn; children, Joshua and Katie Hanenburg; grandchildren, Harlyn Hanenburg, Henley Hanenburg, and one on the way; brother, Michael Carey; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, May 31, 2024, at 1:30 pm at MKD Stegenga Funeral Chapel, 1601 Post Drive NE, Belmont, MI. Burial will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family on Friday, May 31, one hour prior to service from 12:30-1:30 pm at MKD Stegenga Funeral Chapel. I worked with Mark for 20 plus years. The first time I met him I have to say I was a little intimidated. He was tall had a beard and wasn't overly smiley. It wasn't long before I realized that under the gruff exterior was a heart of gold. He was a little cautious letting you in, but once you passed muster, he was always willing to help and would take time to teach, we all benefited from his knowledge. I'm better for knowing him. Thank you, Mark. Chuck Hunter

I’m sorry for your loss, Dawn. Mark was an exceptional man, and I’ll cherish the memories of him dearly. He had a genuine authenticity about him; you always knew where you stood with Mark. He was a rare person, and I know that I will never meet another quite like him. I will miss my friend deeply. -- Jim Williams

Sorry for your loss Dawn, Josh, & Family. Worked with Mark for 15 years and found him to be supportive and helpful whenever needed. Mark and Family suffered so much in his later years, it just was not right. Mark was brilliant and yes he would help anyone in need. Miss you my brother. See you soon!
