Richard Couturier

October 30, 1926 ~ February 4, 2021

Richard Thomas Couturier, warmly known as Dick, peacefully left his earthly body and entered the arms of Jesus on Friday February 5, 2021. Dick loved the Lord and relied on God to provide all things as he lovingly raised 11 children along with his beloved wife Donna of 63 years before she passed on February 5, 2011. He was also preceded in death by his by sons, Mark Couturier, Timothy Couturier; parents, Phillip and Helen Couturier. Dick is survived by his children, Thomas (Roberta) Couturier, David Couturier, Suzanne (Robert) Dill, Christopher (Iny) Couturier, Patricia (David) Hall, Michael (Deb) Couturier, Richard (Lori) Couturier, Kathy (David Dusendang) Couturier, Daniel (Jean) Couturier; daughter-in-law, Denise Couturier; 39 grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren. Dick was part of the greatest generation, living through the great depression and serving in the Army during World War II. He was patriotic, hardworking, and self-sacrificing. Dick started an ornamental metal shop in his garage in the early 1960s while living in Belmont, MI. His children remember cranking the bellow on the forge and twisting spindles by hand. The business grew and in 1967, The Couturier Iron Craft Inc. located in Comstock Park, was established. Dick was not a fancy man, but was a humble and generous man, living a simple life. He enjoyed working hard to provide for his growing family. He always encouraged and supported his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to geez “be a person.” Dick had a lot of friends, but his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his “Best Friends.” Dick always took interest in what the special people in his life were doing. He attended many of his grandchildren’s recitals, sporting events and activities. Over the years, he enjoyed nature, taking walks, hiking, camping. and cross-country skiing. As a teenager, he was a successful ski jumper and won various medals, often placing in the top three. Dick was a devout Catholic and a member of Assumption BVM. Almost every year he spent a week with the Monks of the Abbey of Gethsemani Monastery in Kentucky where he enjoyed a week of solitude and prayer. He also had the opportunity to travel to Israel and Italy. Dick cherished the Word and read from his Bible every night. The family wishes to thank Dave, “his buddy”, who took care of him and mom while she was alive for over 25 years. Dick will be greatly missed, but we will remember with fondness the memories made and some of his special sayings, “I Love you, man!” and “You’re my best friend!”. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00AM Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church 6390 Belmont Ave (with seating capacity limited). Family will greet relatives and friends 1:00PM to 3:00PM and 5:00PM to 7:00PM, Monday at Stegenga Funeral Chapel – Belmont 1601 Post Dr. and Tuesday 1 hour prior to the service at church. Prayer of rosary will be recited at 7:00PM at the funeral chapel. Memorial contributions can be made to Consolata Missionary Sisters, 6801 Belmont Ave. NE or Michigan Conference Camp for the Blind. I worked for Couturier Iron Craft back in 2008 even though my time there was short Dick always made me feel like I belonged. When he would stop in he lit up the office the positive energy he brought was amazing. I got to meet his wife Donna and she was the sweetest. He would talk fondly of his meetings with friends at the “filling station” and how he enjoyed those times and their food. He was a great man who made others feel welcomed into his life. Thank you, I have never and will never forget your kind soul. You will be missed!

I remember going to the Couturier house in Belmont and seeing your dad working in the garage.  His hard work sure paid  off.  Dave was sure a comfort to your Dad.

As the Irish say “There are good ships & there are wood ships, the ships that sail the sea. But the best ships are the friendships & may they always be”
I miss our crazy talks in your office! God bless you Dick and may God bless the Couturier family.

I remember the Christmas’s where the whole living room was filled to the brim with gifts the little table we would squeeze in to eat dinner in the kitchen. I remember going to Uncle Dicks shop being so impressed with all the amazing art work that would go into prominent businesses and homes. I remember always feel so much love when I was around my extended family. I remember dancing at weddings, riding on snowmobiles and watching my cousins working on cars in the garage. So many memories to mention. Always love, always feeling at home, always those amazing bear hugs from my ever smiling, ever joyful Uncle. But mostly that laugh, that amazing belly laugh that warmed the whole room.
Love You All So Dearly.
