Richard Keller Conder passed away on November 2, 2024, at the age of 89, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dick was a graduate of New York Military Academy, and a member of the United States Air Force. He was a radio announcer for over 30 years, retiring from WGVU Public Radio in 1995. Post-retirement he worked as a volunteer DJ at WYCE. He was known as a walking jazz encyclopedia, an incredible home chef, an avid reader, and a loving dad and husband. Raised by Robert and Katherine Conder, in Grosse Pointe, Dick inherited his father’s love of gardening, and his mother’s love of cooking. It was during his time at New York Military Academy that Dick was exposed to New York City jazz clubs where he saw some of the world’s most famous musicians perform. He was a journalist for the Air Force. His love of music and his expertise in communications led him to a lifelong career in radio. Dick lived in many places across the USA, but for 26 years Rockford, MI is where he and his wife CJ called home. His happiest times were spent grilling by the lake for family and friends, or reading on the sofa with a cat on his lap. Richard is preceded in death by his wife, CJ; daughter, Mary Kristen; sister, Marcia; and his grandson PJ. He is survived by his children, Marcy, Greg, and Mackenna; as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family would like to thank Clark Retirement in Grand Rapids, MI, for providing extraordinary dementia services; and also to recognize their staff who were true friends to Dick. A service celebrating and honoring Richard’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at MKD Stegenga Funeral Chapel, 1601 Post Dr. NE, Belmont, Michigan. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to WYCE 88.1 FM.
