Charles “Charlie” Wertz, age 75, of Belmont, Michigan passed away after a short illness on Sunday, October 20, 2024. Charlie was kind, loving, and generous, and was blessed with a great sense of humor. He was a Vietnam veteran who proudly served his country in the US Navy. Charlie lived most of his life in Pitcairn, Pennsylvania. He retired after many years of dedicated service in the mail room at the Veterans’ Administration Hospital near Pittsburgh. He lived in Belmont, Michigan for the past 15 years to be close to his family and was a member of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church. Charlie enjoyed playing board games and other activities with his family, biking, and learning about history. He enjoyed many trips and luncheons with the Northview Senior Center and was always ready with a well-timed joke while there or at Assumption Church luncheons.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ella Wertz; brother, Walter Wertz; and his beloved aunt and uncle, Ruth and Leo Burke.
Charlie will be lovingly remembered by his cousins, Kevin and Carolann Burke and their family: Lindsay and Andrew and their children, Jaina and Emrys; Jay and Monica and their son, Matthew; Seth and Alexandra and their son, Leo; Paul and Amanda; Maria and her boyfriend, Joshua; and by cousins, Elizabeth and Pastor Arzate and their family: Diana, Bryan, Joshua, and Emmanuel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, November 7, 2024 at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, 6393 Belmont Ave. NE, Belmont, Michigan, with Fr. Charles Schwartz presiding. Relatives and friends may meet the family one hour prior to Mass on Thursday from 10-11 a.m. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church or to the Northview Senior Citizens, 4365 Hunsberger NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49525.
