Lloyd A. Bakken, MD

Lloyd A. Bakken, MD, 76, of Alto, passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2024. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Patricia, of 53 years; children, Bradley Hartman Bakken, Anne Bakken and her husband, Tom Boutrous; grandchildren, Rocco and Dillon Boutrous; siblings, Paul and Shirley Bakken, Rebecca and Barry Mason, Owen and Deanna Bakken, Patty and Steve Schiermeister, and David and Pia Bakken; brother-in-law, Mike Finck. Lloyd was preceded in death by siblings, Dennis Bakken and Anita Finck.

Lloyd earned a Bachelor of Science, Master of Business Administration, and a Medical Doctorate from the University of North Dakota. During his undergraduate tenure he was president of Phi Delta Theta, served on the Board of Governors, was a member of the Blue Key Honor Society and was recognized in the Who’s Who of American Colleges and Universities.

He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for nine years. He first served at Lowry Air Force base in Denver where he was trained in Military Intelligence. Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines was his next assignment where he served as Intelligence Officer for three years; his duties also included debriefing and escorting freed POWs back from Vietnam to the US as part of Operation Homecoming. His next stop was Vandenberg Air Force Base in California where he completed ICBM missile training before being assigned to Grand Forks Air Force Base While in North Dakota, his ICBM crew received seven Outstanding Crew Awards. As a result of Lloyd’s outstanding service to his country, he was awarded two Meritorious Service Medals.

Following his military service, Lloyd began his medical training at the University of North Dakota, graduating in 1986; he then went on to complete his residency in OB GYN at Blodgett/St. Mary’s Hospitals. He was a board-certified OB GYN, practicing here from 1990 – 2002 when he relocated to Marshfield Clinic in Minocqua, WI, until his retirement in 2017. During his career, Lloyd delivered 6,327 babies, all of whom had mothers who adored him. Four times Lloyd traveled to Guatemala with a medical mission team to do GYN surgeries.

While Lloyd’s physical heart was failing, his spiritual heart never faltered. Along with his love of family and babies, he spent his entire life saving a myriad of abandoned animals that included horses, dogs, and cats.
