Sandra J. VerWys, age 81, of Hudsonville passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 after a five plus year struggle with lung cancer. She enjoyed a 49-year career at Spectrum Butterworth, spending many years as a neonatal nurse and finishing her career in cardiology. She cherished her family and particularly enjoyed being a grandma. Sandy was richly blessed as a longtime member of Zion Reformed Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years and worked with the young people. She loved the Lord. She and John frequently worshiped at the Mason County Reformed Church in Ludington, their up north church, which she truly enjoyed. She and John were avid boaters for over 50 years in Holland and later in Ludington. They especially enjoyed cruising the Great Lakes aboard the “Sea Wys”. They also enjoyed their many trips to Hawaii and Florida in addition to their place in Ludington. Sandy always looked forward to her monthly coffee at Panera with the Butterworth girls, her lunch dates with special friends, and of course, her nail and hair appointments. Sandy is survived by her husband, John; daughters, Sherri (Rich) Kleyn, Kathi (Bob) Raymond; grandchildren, Kaleigh Kleyn, Erin (John) Kamps, Erica (Josh) Brubaker, and Louis Raymond; sister, Marilyn (Craig) Boogaart; brother, Ed (Karen) Kohn; sisters-in-law, Eleanor Jones Pierce, Phyllis VerWys; and brother-in-law, Randy Rottschafer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Norbert and Jane Kohn; sister, Dee Rottschafer; inlaws, John and Alberdean VerWys; brothers-in-law, Ken VerWys, Don (Mary) VerWys; sisters-in-law, Barb (Al) DeVries, Mary (Harry) Kaiser; and brother-in-law, Harold Jones. A celebration of Sandy’s life will be held at 3 pm on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at Zion Reformed Church, 4457 36th St. SW, Grandville with Pastor Rick VanderWall officiating. Burial will take place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Relatives and friends may meet the family from 2-3 pm prior to the service at the church. The family thanks Dr. Chen and his team at Lemmen-Holton for the care given to Sandy throughout this journey and to Lori and the Spectrum Health Hospice team during her final weeks. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Spectrum Health Hospice.
